(Even If You Can’t Build One) Pt 3

If you’ve followed along, you’ve bought hosting and installed WordPress software for a swanky new webpage. Today we’ll explain the less obvious perks of WordPress and how you can get a bit more mileage out of your new web software.

This is the third and final entry in our series on owning your own website and creating content with a basic WordPress installation. In language any beginner could understand, we’ll talk about the plugins and tweaks that you can use to get features you might have not realized were even possible.

Basic Website Customizations

Chances are you don’t want your website to look like the stock “Just another WordPress Blog” look it has out of the box. Most themes (like the Picolight theme we downloaded in part 1) have basic menu-based options for switching out background images (or flat colors) as well as header images, link colors, and other various minor edits.

Most of these you can find under “Settings” or “Appearance” in the left hand menu of your WordPress administration page. These are usually pretty user-friendly, very simple ways to customize the look of your website, so we won’t go too deeply into explaining how to change an background image or upload a new header.

Deeper customization of any downloaded theme is also pretty easy if you know a bit of HTML and CSS and have patience enough to learn about your theme and are brave enough to risk breaking something. By navigating to Appearance > Editor you can edit the stylesheets and source of most of the pages that make up your theme.

This is the best way to customize the parts of the layout, fonts, and other parts of the theme that the theme creator didn’t include. This might be the only way to get your website to look the way you want, or it might be a nightmare, if you’re scared of code and scripting.

Here’s a word to the wise when editing your CSS and source in WordPress: always keep a local version you can revert to. It never hurts to at least paste the original into a new notepad window and keep it handy to revert any weird changes you might have made.

Extending Your Site’s Functions with Plugins

Plugins are one of the best features of your new WordPress software. They are crowd-sourced, easy to install extensions that add easy functionality that WordPress doesn’t have straight out of the box. Find the plugins page by navigating to Plugins > Add New.

Search for functionality you’d like to add to your site (like automatic integration with Facebook).

It’s stupidly easy to find a great plugin and install it.

You do have to activate a plugin after installing it. Also, because of the quirks of every different installation of WordPress and differences between hosts, not every plugin will work out for you. Be prepared to install and delete a lot of plugins before you find the ones that suit you the best.

WordPress.org has a list of their most popular plugins (most of which are excellent) to give you great features without a lot of knowledge of coding for web applications. You can download them there, or return to the “add new plugins” menu and add them there (recommended).

Personal recommendations include: Contact Form 7All in One SEO PackPages Posts,Customize RSSEnable Media Replace, and Simple Google Analytics.

What the Heck is a Widget?

Widgets are special plugins that could be defined as little gadgets that populate part of the layout of your webpage. These can show the date, allow readers to subscribe, let them search, or provide additional menus to help them navigate to different content. They can also display your twitter feed, or content from any number of pages you might have put out on other websites.

It makes a lot more sense with a quick demo. You can navigate to Appearance > Widgets to find the page shown above. The Picolight theme we’re using only supports one widget area, which is the right hand sidebar.

The default widgets appear here and can be edited to be whatever you want.

Drag the default widgets to “inactive”…

And when we add a “Custom Menu” to the widget area…

Our page now has a second menu in the sidebar. We can create a new custom menu with outbound links, add a Facebook like button, or whatever floats your boat.

WordPress.org also has a page where you can view some of the more popular plugins that are tagged as “widget.” Again, download them here or use your Plugin Installer to get them.

(Even If You Can’t Build One) Pt 2

(Even If You Can’t Build One) Pt 2

Last week we talked about how to buy and start a simple website using WordPress. Today, we’ll start customizing our WordPress site and get you off on the right foot to having a great quality, feature rich website.

We’ll take a quick walk through the menus of WordPress and help to make it easier on a first time user, as well as showing you how to start your new site off with a theme and an easily updatable, customized navigation. It can be intimidating to start a new WordPress site, but stick with us—part two of “How to Own Your Own Website” is coming right up.

What’s In A Basic WordPress Install?

You should be able to find the “back end” of your new WordPress site by visiting your new domain and adding /wp-admin to the end of it. You should get a page that looks quite similar to this one where you can log in and fiddle around with your new page.

This is the dashboard. It has a lot of very useful information, including updates and suggestions for new content to start writing, new plugins to add, or settings that you can tweak. Let’s start by taking a look at the options on this page.

WordPress is pretty straightforward, but the sheer amount of new stuff to learn can be really overwhelming at first. Here’s a quick breakdown of this menu.
Posts creates new blog-style posts. Since WordPress is blogging application, this is at the top of the menu.
Media is for uploading pictures, video, and files. You can do it all from your browser, no FTP program required. This makes everything so much easier.
Links is one of the SEO features of WordPress. Use it to create a list links relevant to your content, or as we’re going to do, simply ignore it.
Pages controls and adds pages that don’t register as “posts” in WordPress. There’s not a lot of difference, except that pages don’t show up in a website’s RSS feed (by default.)
Comments allow you to read moderate what’s being said on your website by visitors.
Appearance allows you to change the backgrounds, menus, headers, colors, etc of your website and theme. It’s also where you download new themes or templates.
Plugins are extensions for your website. They can range from simple to incredibly complex. Many are useful, and some are poor. WordPress will find free plugins for you.
Users allows you to change your username or add other people to your site.
Tools and Settings are technical menus for tweaking aspects of your site.

You can also find updates to your software on this dashboard. This will keep WordPress updated to the newest version as well as updating any Plugins, themes, or other software that you install into your WordPress site.

By default, WordPress can contact the major blog directories and search engines so that your page can show up as a relevant result. You may want to look under Settings > Privacy and set this to “Ask search engines not to index this site” until you’re happy with your page and ready to get it out there. Or just put it out there incomplete—it probably won’t matter much.

Many of the menus have child pages with lots and lots of options. The first two you should familiarize yourself with are Posts and Pages, depending on how you want to use WordPress. If you want to create a blog, “Posts” is probably going to be a place you’re going to spend a lot of time. But if you’re going to make static pages… you guessed it, “Pages” it is.

Customizing A WordPress Install by Changing Themes

WordPress uses sets of style sheets and designs called “Themes” to customize the layout. This can be a great way for non-designers and non-technical people to make their site look better without a lot of effort, and can give mid-range designers a place to start customizing. And advanced WP users can make their own themes, either to sell or to give away as free software.

You can find this menu by navigating to Appearance > Themes.

Installing new themes is a snap. You can simply download new ones through WordPress by switching to the “Install Themes” tab.

You’ll find tons of categories you can pick from to find a theme, including color and column layout. Today, we’re going to pick these options, because we want to be able to customize our background, colors, header, and menus of our site.

WordPress brings you a large list of themes that fit the criteria you picked.

One of the coolest features is that you can preview a theme before you install it. We’ll be using this one for our demonstration. It’s called Picolight.

Click install and then click through to download and install the files into your WordPress backend.

Even after all the files are downloaded and put in place, you still have to “Activate” it to tell WordPress to use the theme.

You’ll also find a lot of options, once your theme is installed and activated. Let’s take a look at those now.

Customizing Your Main Navigation

Menus are likely the first thing you should begin customizing. Most newer WordPress themes support “custom menus” which can be edited here. But to start customizing a menu, you have do a few other tweaks first.

Find Pages > Add New Page and start creating all the pages you want in your menu. You can also delete any pages you don’t want to show up on your site here as well.

When you finish your pages, click the publish button to put them out into the world.

Continue making pages until you’ve gotten enough to populate your menu, or you’re tired of making them.

Your next step is to find “Reading Settings” under Settings > Reading Settings. Here you can change the “home” page of your site to a static page and not the default blog frontpage (if that’s what floats your boat). You can also set your blog frontpage to any existing static page. Hit “Save Changes” when you’re done with those settings.

(Author’s Note: I mistakenly used the “Sample Page” as the static front page, later changing its name to “Home.” You can also do this, but I foolishly didn’t show how to do it by going back to “Pages” and renaming the Sample Page.)

Return to Menus by navigating to Appearance > Menus. You can type directly into “Menu Name” to create a menu. Any name is fine, just remember what it was later.

Check pages you want and click “Add to Menu.”

The topmost page will appear first in the navigation and the bottommost will appear last. You can click and drag them around to reorder them.

You also have the option of adding external links and internal Categories to your menus as well, all pretty handy additions.

Find “Save Menu” at the bottom right of the page to finalize the changes.

Then simply find the “Locations” section of the same menus page. Picolight only supports one menu by default, so we simply select our menu (we named it “Main Header” earlier) and select save.

And when we check our frontpage, we find that our new menu is installed and waiting to be navigated. This menu updates from this backend—if you wish to add or remove pages, there’s no need to edit 50 html files.

If You Can’t Build Website

( If You Can’t Build One) Pt 1

You’ve probably put up plenty of pages and accounts on various services and blogs. But today, learn how to become a real website owner and put together an awesome feature-rich website of your own with little to no experience.

Having your own website is expected in many fields. You can host your resume and various files, or put up an online business card to make sure that you’re one of the top results when you do an ego search on Google. Whatever your reason is, you don’t have to pay hundreds (or thousands?) of dollars to have somebody else make a website for you, when you can use free software and cheap hosting to make your own in minutes. In this first part of a multi-part series, we’ll discuss how to put up a simple website and and how to start owning your own domain.

Purchasing a Domain and Hosting

To own your own website, you usually have to pay for a minimum of two things. To make your life easier, you can get both from the same company. The first thing you need is a domain name—that’s the URL that you type into your browser to find your website. Basically, buying a domain is putting yourself on the map so that remote computers can find you. You pay a fee, usually once a year, to notify the services necessary to direct your URL to the second part of your website, your host.

Domains can be registered on any major hosting site, although there are some dedicated domain registrars around. You can absolutely buy a domain from a registrar and host it with another company. This is not terribly difficult and involves changing the A Host settings. However, for the sake of simplicity, we recommend buying hosting from the same company that sells you your domain. Expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $25 USD per year for each domain you buy. Many companies offer incentives for buying hosting and domains, and may give you a discounted or even free domain.

(Author’s Note: Be careful using the “Check Domain Availability” search bars. Depending on the integrity of who is doing the search, the registrar may register the domain out from under you and force you to buy if from them. If you’re searching for a domain, be ready to buy it right away!)

Hosting is the second required part of the equation. Hosting is space and bandwidth leased out from a bunch of remote servers that pipe your information throughout the web. While it does some fancy stuff and crunch some data for you, you can basically look at your hosting as hard drive space you can store the stuff that makes up your website. That’s quite an oversimplification, but since we’re not writing about how to run your own server or write your own web applications, we’ll do fine with our simple explanations today.

Hosting can be bought at a number of places (such as all of the above) with lots and lots of fancy features, most of which you won’t use unless you’re going to hire a developer (or learn more about developing applications for the web). The only ones that are important (as of the date this article was written) are:

  • PHP version 5.2.4 or greater
  • MySQL version 5.0 or greater

Hosting like this can be bought (usually) for less than $10 a month, although your mileage may vary. Even the most basic of plans offers PHP and MySQL, which are both required for loads of common software for the web. Find a one stop shop for hosting and domains at any of the following providers.

Dreamhost and Bluehost are two hosts that feature easy integration with WordPress, so you may want to use one of them if you’re a beginner and following along with our how-to. If you’re not afraid to get your hands into some confusing setups and help files, you can set it up yourself on any server that you choose. We recommend sticking with Dreamhost or Bluehost for most, if not all, readers of this article.

On a final note about hosting and domain registration—don’t agonize over a clever domain. If you’re going to put up a website to promote yourself or use as an online business card, simply using your name as a domain is perfectly acceptable. Use your name, your Xbox username, your first dog’s name, or whatever. It doesn’t have to be a huge ordeal to pick a domain because you’re probably not going to build the next Google on it. Besides, you can always buy a second (or third or fourth) later.

Web Software for A Feature-Rich Modern Site

If you started dabbling with HTML several years ago, you might have noticed that web pages have become quite a lot more complicated. If your understanding of HTML scripting hasn’t grown with the web (or is simply nonexistent), have no fear. Modern web pages are more robust than a few random text files coded in notepad and tossed on the internet. Most modern websites have a Content Management System behind the scenes that allows non-technical users to update content, design, and customize feature-rich web software using only a web browser.

Three of the most popular software packages are WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal. All are free downloads, and all will allow you to manage, design, and update a site of your very own. Our how-to today is going to focus on installing WordPress.org software. All are fairly easy to install, even without using a host with integrated “One-Click” style installers for the software.

The one click scripts can download, install, and create all of the necessary MySQL databases you need to use the software. It’s seriously almost too easy. Let’s take a look.

Installing WordPress (The Easy Way)

When you log into your shiny new hosting, you’ll likely be faced with some kind of control panel. This is a common software for a web hosting control panel, simply called Cpanel. On it, likely near the bottom, you can find a section called something like “Site Builders” where you’ll find “1-Click Install” or “Simple Scripts.”

Click the link for the 1 click install software.

Most of the sites will have lists of software they will download and install for you. Find WordPress from the list they give you and choose to install it.

Simply tell it to install it on the next screen to continue.

You should be able to pick the domain you bought earlier, provided you also bought it from the host. Select the dropdown and find your URL—something like http://www.myawesomewebsite.com and it will do all the hard work for you.

You may have to agree to some software terms and conditions. Nothing surprising here.

From the scripts screen, you should be given links to your new domain and to the “backend” page that logs you into your content manager. It’s fairly simple to use, but we’ll cover it as well as some other basics in an up and coming article.

And congratulations! You now have your own WordPress.org website based on your own domain ready to be customized to your heart’s content. Check back with us as we expand this multiple part series, to cover basic customizations in WordPress, a more advanced install, and some tips on getting a great website out of your basic WordPress install.

DreamHost – Review Free webhosting provider

DreamHost Review

When preparing for this DreamHost review, we purchased our DreamHost review account using the same method as any other customer, via the sign-up page on their web site. We did not inform DreamHost that we intended to perform a review of their services. In this way, we believe we have avoided any chance of receiving ‘special treatment’ from DreamHost.
About DreamHost

Established by four Californian Computer Science undergraduates in 1997, DreamHost has grown to become one of the larger players in the web hosting business, with a full-time staff of 50 and over 500,000 domains hosted. Fortunately, this growth has not prevented DreamHost from retaining their original customer oriented focus.

DreamHost boasts perhaps the most loyal customer base in the web hosting industry, with many customers rising to defend the company in times of trouble. This may be the result of the irreverent attitude of those running the company and the almost total transparency shown when things go wrong. This attitude is reflected in the very amusing monthly newsletter and official company blog.

As you can imagine, hosting 500,000+ domains requires some impressive hardware and the DreamHost data centre, consisting of hundreds of multi-CPU servers running Debian Linux, is more than adequate for the task. The data centre boasts a UPS system, with back-up generator and multiple redundant gigabit connections to the Internet.

Control Panel

Unusually, the admin panel provided by DreamHost is not an ‘off-the-shelf’ commercial product, such as cPanel, instead DreamHost have their own custom written admin panel. While this panel can be a bit of a culture shock for those coming from other hosts, in our opinion, the DreamHost panel, once you are accustomed to it, offers a level of functionality and ease-of-use that exceeds packages such as cPanel.

Just about every task that you need to do, from managing the billing for your account, creating email addresses, installing software, registering domains to DNS configuration can be done via the panel with a minimum of fuss. For those that enjoy doing things manually, DreamHost provides full shell access with all accounts.

DreamHost also supplies a web-based FTP client for those situations where a ‘real’ FTP client is not available. Although, due to the inherent limitations of such web-based clients, we suggest that you use a ‘real’ FTP client if you can.

One thing that DreamHost does not offer is any kind of easy-to-use page creation utility, you will need to design you websites locally on your own computer and upload the relevant files to your DreamHost web space, or take advantage of the excellent ‘one-click-install’ feature of the admin panel (see below).
Scripting Support

All DreamHost plans support the full gamut of server-side scripting languages, including PHP4, PHP5, CGI, Perl, Python and Ruby / Ruby-On-Rails. CRON access is available for those that require scripts to run at regular intervals and custom .htaccess files are available on a domain-by-domain (or sub-domain) basis. DreamHost also provide full shell access (SSH and Telnet) on all accounts.

The DreamHost admin panel also provides for the ‘one-click install’ (and upgrade) of various popular scripts, such as WordPress, Joomla, phpbb, Gallery2 and MediaWiki. The number of applications available through this ‘one-click install’ page is less than that provided by something like Fantastico, but most of the popular packages are represented. Of-course, packages not supported through this page can be installed manually; it just takes a little more work.
Reliability

DreamHost has a reputation for excellent reliability and indeed during the first few months of hosting our test site at DreamHost this proved to be the case. However, over the last few months the DreamHost data centre has experienced a number of problems that resulted in the entire DreamHost network being off-line for extended periods, resulting in our test site being unreachable for hours at a time.

To be fair to DreamHost, some of this downtime was due to planned maintenance and advanced warning was given to customers. However, planned or unplanned, an outage is an outage and having your sites go missing in action can be extremely frustrating for customers. Hopefully, DreamHost can get on top of the data centre problems they have been experiencing and return to the excellent reliability we experienced in the first few months of our testing.

To DreamHost’s credit, when there are problems, the company shows an almost total transparency, explaining exactly what went wrong and why, even if the explanation casts their own staff in a bad light. This honestly is a refreshing change for a web hosting company and we firmly believe many other companies could learn a thing or two from DreamHost in this respect.
Technical Support

All direct technical support for the DreamHost Level 1 plan is provided through support tickets sent via the admin panel. While the majority of our support queries were answered promptly, usually within 12 hours, some queries took a little longer to elicit a reply, in one case around 36 hours. The actual replies were always friendly and provided the information needed to resolve the issue at hand. DreamHost have said that they are currently hiring more support staff, so I expect the response time for support requests to improve in the future.

The more expensive DreamHost plans do provide, for customers within the United States, a limited number of support ‘call-backs’ per month, but since we had the Level 1 plan and were located outside of the United States, we did not have the opportunity to test this method of technical support.

DreamHost also maintains a wiki and customer support forum, both of which can be an excellent source of information, often avoiding the need to lodge a support request.
Conclusion

Overall, the DreamHost Level 1 plan represents excellent value for money. The starting quota of 200GB of disk-space and 2000GB of monthly data transfer/bandwidth should be more than enough for even the busiest web sites.

The planned and unplanned outages experienced by our DreamHost test site do cast a shadow over an otherwise excellent hosting service, but hopefully these outages will not become regular occurrences and DreamHost can return to the exceptional reliability we experienced at the beginning of our test period.
